Language Prerequisites

Language preparation is essential for optimal cultural integration. All students studying in locations where the official language  is anything other than English are required to either have a minimum background in the language, or to study the new language as one of their classes while abroad.

For countries where French, German, Russian or Spanish is spoken, a minimum of 4 semesters of college-level language study, or the equivalent, is routinely required.  Some have higher requirements (see list below).  Note:  Completion of level 44 is the equivalent of 4 semesters of study.  One course completed at the 100 level or above will meet the requirement of 5 semesters of study, two at the 100 level or above will equal 6 semesters.  Even for students who test out of the required level (unless a native speaker), most programs will require at least one recent, college-level course in the language completed prior to participation.

For Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and Korean language destinations, a minimum of two semesters or the equivalent of language study is required by Scripps (see list below). For Portuguese, at least one semester of Portuguese, or a minimum of 3 semesters in a Romance language (French, Italian or Spanish) is required.

There is no language requirement if the host country language is not taught at the Claremont Colleges (e.g., Czech, Danish, Nepali, Swahili etc.).  Scripps students are required to take a course in the language of the host country while participating on the program.

In some instances, the Scripps College foreign language prerequisites for study abroad may surpass program sponsor requirements. See the below list to confirm the minimum number of semesters of language needed to be eligible to study under the specific programs:
