Spring 2018 Closing Information
GENERAL CLOSING INFORMATION
EVERY student is required to check out of their room at the end of the academic year. Below are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare to leave Scripps in a few weeks.
- Attend the closing meeting for your building. Your RA will share the time/location via email.
- The last meal in the dining hall is dinner on Friday, May 11, 2018.
- ALL TRASH SHOULD BE TAKEN TO THE DUMPSTERS. Dumpster locations will be posted on the bulletin boards of each residence hall once locations are confirmed.
Departure – Prior to May 7
Students who plan to vacate their rooms prior to May 7, may do so by working with the Residential Life Office to schedule a check-out time. Please contact ResLife@scrippscollege.edu at least 48 hours in advance of your planned departure. Please note students choosing to check-out on Saturday, May 5 or Sunday, May 6 should call the RA On-Call phone between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Departure – May 7-11
Students who plan to vacate their rooms May 7-11 need to visit the GJW Living Room between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. to check-out. Residential Life Staff will be available to accept key(s) and check you out of your room. Students departing from their rooms between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. must arrange to return their keys and check-out prior to 10:00 p.m. All doors should be locked upon students’ departures.
Please note: Residential Life and Facilities staff will check the condition of student rooms after they have left campus. Students assigned to the room are responsible for any damages that may have occurred during the academic year. Any documented damages will be applied to a student’s account after checking out.
Departure – May 12
All non-graduating students (unless otherwise approved) are required to vacate their rooms and depart campus by 12:00 p.m. on Saturday May 12th. Students checking-out Saturday, May 12th must do so at the GJW Living Room between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
How You Can Prepare In Advance
Please review your RCR on your housing portal. Students will be able to submit any changes to their RCR until Tuesday, May 1 at 5pm. Student furniture removal requests that were submitted properly during the year, will be reflected on their RCRs. Students are strongly encouraged to begin packing sooner rather than later in order to ensure a smooth check-out process. If you have any questions or concerns about your RCR, please email ResLife@ScrippsCollege.edu.
All residential hall room keys must be returned to Residential Life Staff when students leave campus. All non-residential hall keys (i.e. labs, work-study, offices) must be returned to Facilities, located in the basement of Lang, during business hours prior to checking out.
Ready For Check-Out?
Students prepared to check-out will have
- Removed all personal belongings from their assigned room
- Left assigned room in the condition it was when they checked in
- Closed windows, vacuumed, removed trash & stickers/hooks from walls
- Removed college keys from personal key chains/rings
- Locked the door locked behind them
Only first-class mail is forwarded by the Mail Services staff to permanent addresses on file; magazines will not be forwarded or saved. Students requesting mail be forwarded to a different address must contact the Mail Services staff. Students on campus for the summer, should inform Mail Services staff so that mail can be held.
Due to a limited amount of parking, we encourage all students to move their vehicles from the North Amherst lot (behind Dorsey/Browning/SCORE/Office of Student Engagement), to make room for a loading zone for students checking out, beginning Friday, April 27, 2018. Students planning to leave their vehicle at Scripps during the summer, does so at their own risk. Parked cars will not be ticketed, so long as they are in the Scripps parking garage on the east wall closest to Mills Avenue and show a 2017-2018 academic year parking sticker.
Students intending to leave their registered bicycles at Scripps during the summer, does so at their own risk. Any unregistered/expired registration bicycles left on campus will be cut and removed from campus. All bicycles must be stored in sheds during the summer and MUST be registered via the Scripps bicycle registration policy that is posted on all the sheds. Any other items in the sheds will also be removed.
This year we will be collecting lightly used items for the Campus Sustainability Committee’s Scripps Scraps program. If you wish to donate items, there will be three drop off locations in a remote corner of each drop off area clearly labeled of where to do place your items and what will be accepted beginning Monday, May 7th and ending Friday, May 12th.
- Toll Living Room– Serving Clark, Toll, Browning, and Dorsey Halls
- Frankel Living Room– Serving Frankel, Routt, Senior Routt, and New Hall.
- Kimberly Living Room– Serving Kimberly, Wilbur, and GJW Halls
Scripps College does not provide summer storage anywhere on campus, this includes but is not limited to residence hall basements or offices. Plan to take all your personal items with you or arrange to store them in a local storage facility. Scripps is not responsible for any items left in the residence halls over the summer, and all items left in the residence halls, offices, stores, etc. after Monday, May 14, 2018 will be discarded.

STUDENTS NOT RETURNING IN THE FALL
Students planning to take a leave of absence, transfer, or withdrawal from Scripps should schedule an appointment with their Primary Contact Dean. Students deciding not to return during the summer, should notify their Primary Contact Dean of their decisions.

Opening of Residence Halls
Residence halls will be open for returning students at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 2. Students needing to return prior to that date must contact the Residential Life Office to seek permission/approval. Check-in hours are from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., Sunday, September 2 and Monday, September 3. The first day of classes is Tuesday, September 4, 2018.
