Dear Prospective Music Ensemble Member:
Congratulations on being accepted to Scripps College! Please accept our best wishes as you embark on this important time of study and preparation for the future.
One of the hallmarks of the Claremont Colleges is a strong commitment to music and the performing arts. The Joint Music Program of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges provides performing opportunities in ensembles of critically recognized quality and musicianship. While these ensembles are comprised of a number of music majors, the majority of our students come from a variety of interests and majors, from science and math to the social sciences, arts and humanities. These are the three Joint Music Program ensembles for which you may qualify:
The 60-70 voice Claremont Concert Choir (MUS 173JM, 0.5CR) is an auditioned chorus performing a cappella and piano- accompanied literature from the renaissance to the present as well as major works of the 18th through 21st centuries with symphony orchestra. The Claremont Concert Choir regularly rehearses Monday and Wednesday from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m.
The Claremont Chamber Choir (MUS 174JM, 0.5CR) is a select, 22-voice group focusing on a cappella repertoire from 1300 to the present. More advanced singers may want to audition for this ensemble for which there may be openings. The Chamber Choir regularly rehearses from 5:40-6:40 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays plus a 30 minute sectional each week, as well as either Monday or Wednesday, 4:15-5:30, with the Concert Choir.
The Claremont Concert Orchestra (MUS 175JM, 0.5CR) is a 50-70 member auditioned symphony orchestra specializing in major orchestral works of the 18th through 21st centuries. Besides having its own concert series, it annually performs with the Concert Choir. The Claremont Concert Orchestra regularly rehearses Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.
In the fall, the Claremont Concert Choir and Claremont Chamber Choir will perform a concert of music by various composers in a program that traces an emotional journey from pain and despair through consolation to joy. Claremont Concert Orchestra’s plans for the academic year include performances of Brahms’ Second Symphony, Sibelius’ Finlandia, as well as exciting works by Weber, Sarasate, and other great composers. At the end of 2016-2017, both ensembles will come together to perform Mozart’s Requiem. The accomplishments of these two ensembles are many, and we want you to join with us and your student colleagues from your own and other colleges in these highly regarded groups to create these magnificent works of musical art.
Joint Music Program ensemble auditions are held at the Scripps College Performing Arts Center (10th and Dartmouth Streets) at the end of new student orientation week, beginning August 27. To find out more about auditions, orchestral players may visit http://www.jointmusicprogram.org/orchestra/auditions while choristers can follow the following link: http://www.jointmusicprogram.org/choirs/auditions-choir.
Instrumental and voice lessons are available at Scripps and Pomona Colleges. Lessons at Scripps are very affordable, and students who are members of a Joint Music ensemble taking lessons at Scripps or Pomona are eligible to participate in a pilot program to help pay for private lessons.
