New Student Orientation

Welcome to the Scripps New Student Program!

June 1, 2016

Dear New Students,

Welcome to Scripps College; we are so excited for you to join us! Our names are Marie Vail ‘17 (Biology), and Zizzy Murphy ’19 (Undeclared), and we are the New Student Program Coordinators for the 2016-2017 academic year. As students, we understand firsthand how confusing, challenging, and rewarding college may be (sometimes all at once!). Our role is to support you during your transition to Scripps and throughout your first year as students as you figure out more about both college and yourself. We accomplish this through our year-long Peer Mentor Program, academic and social events each week, and in hosting a variety of trips off-campus to area attractions.

The most personal component to the program is your Peer Mentor. Each mentor is matched with a group of six to eight First Years based on common interests, which cultivates a space for you to build relationships with new and current students. These relationships provide a community of supportive classmates from day one, enabling you to explore all of the resources and opportunities that Scripps has to offer. Peer Mentors complete training to be a wealth of knowledge for new students. They are well-versed on clubs and organizations, resources on-campus and across the consortium, and in supporting a wide array of students. Simply put: they are exceptional resources to new students and can be wonderful friends.

The New Student Program also hosts on-campus activities and off-campus trips throughout the year. Our events give you the opportunity to become more acclimated with Scripps, The Claremont Colleges, and the greater Los Angeles area. Some of our upcoming plans for next year include the Scripps Five College New Student Carnival during orientation, a Resource Race through the consortium, and trips to Universal Studios and Disneyland. Our time here at Scripps has been amazing and full of exploration, and we hope the same for all of you!

We are available now and during the school year to answer all questions and concerns you may have. The best way to contact us is through emailing or by calling the Student Activities Office at (909) 607-4307. Please don’t hesitate to reach out; we are here to support you!

We eagerly anticipate meeting you on August 25, 2016!
