Presidential Search Update

Posted: February 12, 2016

Dear Members of the Scripps College Community,

As co-chairs of the Presidential Search Committee, we write to provide the community with an update on our ongoing search efforts.

Since our last update to the Board, the Presidential Search Committee has been busy, meeting both in person and by telephone numerous times.  We have experienced robust interest from strong candidates in the search and, with the assistance of our consultant, have been actively assessing the credentials of a wide range of individuals.  This has included, among other things, reviewing written materials such as CVs, letters of interest and nomination, and written references; conducting press searches; and speaking with selected individual references. We have also interviewed a number of candidates and expect to meet with more in the coming weeks.

As a result of the extensive outreach and vetting process in which we are engaged, the Committee does not expect to conclude its work by the time of the Board’s early March 2016 meeting, as it had originally hoped. We have been working under a very aggressive schedule, but now believe we need additional time to properly and fully assess the candidates. As we have emphasized before, appointing a president is the Board’s most important responsibility, and the Committee is committed to taking the time it needs to identify a candidate that it can wholeheartedly recommend to the Board as having the skills, experience, and personality to be Scripps’ next leader.

We expect that the Committee will finish its review of all candidates in the coming weeks and then have in-depth interviews with a small number of the most highly qualified. We continue to anticipate the completion of the search and appointment of a new president in time for the next academic year and will continue to update the community about our progress.

Sincerely,

Bob and Betsy
