Policy Change: Student Health Insurance Requirement Expanded to Include All Students June 2013

Posted: June 25, 2013

Dear Continuing Scripps Students and Parents,

Summer greetings from the Dean of Students Office. Although the campus looks quiet, we are busy preparing for the upcoming year. I thought it most important that I write with news of our newly expanded student health insurance requirement. Although we hope that all students have a year of good health and remain accident free, my staff and I know the challenges students face who have limited or no health insurance. Consequently, beginning this fall, Scripps College will require that all enrolled students demonstrate proof of health insurance coverage or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) offered by the Claremont Colleges. (Note: This requirement already applies to entering students,rising sophomores and international students.)

What you need to know

Whether you enroll in The Claremont Consortium’s SHIP or instead opt to waive enrollment in SHIP and use your own health insurance plan, your insurance must include all of the following elements*:

  • Coverage must be continuous (no break or termination) for the entire academic year;
  • Coverage must be effective prior to 8/25/13
  • Maximum lifetime benefit must be at least $500,000; and
  • Deductible must be $1000 or less per policy year.
  • All of the above elements are included in SHIP.

Please note: Some students have opted to enroll in SHIP in order to supplement health coverage limits beyond their provider network and because SHIP covers many specialty and general care services not provided through the Consortium’s Student Health Services center.

In the coming weeks, the College will be back in touch via email to all students, including international students, with detailed instructions about the steps needed to either waive enrollment in SHIP by demonstrating appropriate health care coverage is already in place for the 2013-14 academic year or enroll in SHIP. Students will also be contacted via email by Ascension Benefits and Insurance Solutions, the company that will be managing the enrollment/waiver process for Scripps College and other Claremont Colleges. SHIP will cost $1779.00 for students under 26, the same rate as offered in 2012/2013.

If you have questions in the meantime, please contact the Dean of Students Office at (909) 621-8277 or at deanofstudentsoffice@scrippscollege.edu.

Hope your summer is off to a good start!

All best wishes,

Bekki Lee
Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Affairs
