CMS Roundup : January 21-27

Posted: January 29, 2013

Last week was all about rivalry as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) squared off against Pomona-Pitzer (PP) in both basketball and swim.

The most intense competition hit the pool last Saturday in the closest meet of the season. The Athenas Swimming and Diving team narrowly beat PP 152-146, making them 8-1 overall and 7-0 in SCIAC. There is one regular meet left on February 2 against University of Redlands.

Meanwhile, Athenas basketball were in peak form this week, winning three games in a row. Starting with a decisive victory over Caltech (63-40), they went on to beat the Sagehens 71-49 Thursday and Whittier 58-47 Saturday. These wins move the team up two standings in the rankings to sixthplace and shine a spotlight on shooting guard Madeline Barnes ‘14, who averaged a team high of 17.5 points with 4 rebounds, and forward Mara Falahee ’16, who had a season high 14 rebounds in the Pitzer-Pomona game alone. CMS is now 8-11 overall and 4-6 in SCIAC.

Last, spring sports are starting up and Athenas water polo kicked off their season Sunday at an invitational at UC Santa Barbara, losing to both UCLA (15-3) and UC San Diego (20-12).

Athlete Spotlight of the Week: Madeline Barnes ’14

In addition to her prowess on the basketball court, Madeline Barnes also flexes her muscles with CMS Athletics as a tutor, a trainer, and a member of the emergency team. A Classics and pre-med major, she’s played basketball since the age of four and has been on a competitive team for over 17 years.

“My teams always include some of my best friends,” she says, “and the camaraderie and challenges we face together makes all the work worth it.”
