CMS Athletics Week in Review: September 8-14

The Athena volleyball team was 3-1 in the Trinity Fall Classic in San Antonio, Texas, over the weekend. CMS lost to the host, Trinity (3-0), and beat Texas Lutheran (3-2), Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-1) and Southwestern (3-1). Audrey Breitwieser (CMC ’16) led the team with 54 kills over the four matches, a .296 kill percentage. Megan Coleman (CMC ’15) totaled more than 100 digs. CMS (9-3) begins SCIAC competition at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 against Caltech.
Women’s Cross Country
The Athena cross country runners competed in the UC Riverside Invitational over the weekend and CMS was the top Division III program in both the 6000m Invitational and the 5000m Open events. In the 6000m, Bridget Blum (CMC ’16, 21:11) finished fifth overall and was the first non-Division I finisher. CMS finished ahead of five SCIAC teams in the Open event. The top seven Athenas finished within 10 seconds of each other: Breanna Sewell (CMC ’18, 19:33), Olivia Carmo (CMC ’17, 19:34), Amber Scott (CMC ’17, 19:37) and Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17, 19:41), Laura Broderick (SCR ’18, 19:42) and Emma Su (SCR, ’18,19:43) and Kathleen Muenzen (SCR ’17, 19:43). CMS next competes in the CS San Bernardino Invitational and the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 27.
The Athena soccer team played two games in very hot weather over the weekend, tying Lewis & Clark (0-0) in overtime and losing to UC Santa Cruz (2-1). Against Lewis & Clark, Darrah Shields (CMC ’16) led the team with six shots, three on goal. Makella Brems (CMC ’17) scored on a penalty kick in the UC Santa Cruz game for the Athenas’ only goal on the weekend. The Athenas (3-2-1) host Cal Lutheran to begin SCIAC play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17.
