CMS defeated Westmont in their annual Nationball Classic on Saturday in Santa Barbara. The Athenas won their race 21-40. Senior All-American Allison Barnwell (CMC) was the first official finisher in the women’s race (CMS asst. coach Jennifer Tavé [SCR 12] won the race) as she finished just in front of junior teammate Sara Mostatabi (CMC). Barnwell ran 33 seconds faster than she did last year in the Nationball Classic. CMS had eight of the top 11 finishers on the women’s. Next up for the Athenas is the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The Athenas went 1-0-1 after a tie in double overtime against Trinity (1-1) and a victory against St. Olaf (2-1) over the weekend to push their season record to 1-1-1. Junior midfielder Isabel Lester (CMC) led the team during the week with two goals and an assist. The next match for CMS is at home against UC Santa Cruz on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
The Athenas stayed undefeated on the season after four wins over the weekend at the Posada Royale Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran. CMS registered wins against George Fox (3-0), UC Santa Cruz (3-2), Texas-Dallas (3-0), and ninth-ranked Puget Sound (3-0). Freshman OH Nicole Kerkhof led the team with 70 kills in the tournament including three matches with doubles (kills/digs). CMS looks to improve on its 8-0 record in their next game – the conference opener – which is on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at home vs. Whittier at 7 p.m.
