CMS Athletics Week in Review: March 3-9

The Athena basketball team won the SCIAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2004. CMS faced DePauw in the first round and lost 79-68 in a well-fought game against the defending National Champions and host of the first and second rounds. Freshman Kris Brackmann (CMC) and senior Madeline Barnes (SCR) each scored 19 points in the game. The Athenas finish with a 24-4 record, a program best.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
Ten swimmers on the women’s team are preparing to compete in the NCAA Championships, being held from March 19-22 in Indiana.
The Athena golf team did not compete last week. CMS next competes in the Collegiate Invitational from March 14-16 in Georgia.
CMS lacrosse hosted Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday, winning 11-10 in double overtime. Sophomores Izzy Laterzo (CMC) and Christina Coffin (CMC) scored with 47 and seven seconds remaining in the first overtime period to tie the score at 10 goals each and force a second overtime. Coffin scored the game-winning goal just 1:19 into the period to instantly win it for the Athenas. CMS is now 3-3 overall and travels to the Pacific Northwest to play the University of Puget Sound, George Fox and Linfield over spring break next week.
The Athena softball team was 1-1 over the weekend against La Verne, winning the first game 2-0 then losing the second 5-1. Junior Hayley Schultz (CMC) pitched a shutout while sophomore Brooklyn Robinson (SCR) was 4 for 4 at the plate in the first game. CMS is now 3-6 overall, 3-3 in SCIAC play. The Athenas play a 2 and 4 p.m. double-header at home against Cal Lutheran on Friday (3/14) and then travel to Pomona-Pitzer for games at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday (3/15).
The Athena tennis team did not compete last week, gearing up for matches against Georgetown (3/10), Case Western Reserve (3/12), Whittier (3/14) and Bowdoin (3/15) this week.
Women’s Track & Field
CMS hosted the first SCIAC competition of the season with dual meets against Cal Lutheran and La Verne. Despite having an advantage in the running events, the women lost both: 85-78 to Cal Lutheran, and 90-73 to La Verne. The Athenas had two double winners on the day: freshman Hanna Tarleton (CMC) in the 200 and 400 meters, and senior Ellyn Erving (SCR) in the long and triple jumps. The team will next compete in the Occidental Distance Carnival on Friday, March 14.
Women’s Water Polo
In the Convergence Tournament on Friday and Saturday, CMS was 3-1, beating Cal State Monterey Bay (9-8), Siena College (16-7) and Cal State San Bernardino (14-6), with its only loss to UC San Diego (18-9). Senior Candace Filippelli (CMC) scored a game-high five goals Saturday in the Athenas’ win over Siena. CMS returns to action on Tuesday, March 11, when it takes on George Washington University at Axelrood Pool at 6 p.m.
Five-College Club Sports
The Claremont Colleges women’s rugby team lost 52-17 to league-leading Cal State Long Beach on Saturday at Linde Field. Scoring tries for the Foxes were Katelyn Faust (CMC ’17) and Naomi Brooks (Pitzer ’ 16). After spring break, the Foxes travel to UC Irvine before hosting Cal State Fullerton on April 5.
