CMS Athletics Week in Review: March 24-30

The Athena golf team played in the Walker Cup match-play event against Pomona-Pitzer on Friday and won four of the five pairings. Sophomore Melody Sue (CMC), sophomore Caroline Belmont (CMC), junior Shaina Raskin (SCR), and junior Marissa Suehiro (CMC) each won their pairing. Next up for the Athenas is the SCIAC #2 Tournament at Empire Lakes Golf Course on April 5-6.
The Athena lacrosse was 3-0 last week winning all three games by double figures. They beat Pacific (19-9), DePauw (18-6), and Southwestern (23-3). Sophomore Christina Coffin (CMC) scored five goals in the win over Southwestern. CMS has won their last eight games and are 9-3 on the season, 2-3 in conference. CMS hosts Pomona-Pitzer at 1 p.m. on April 5 for Senior Day on Parents Field.
The Athena softball team was 2-2 over the weekend losing twice to Redlands (1-0, 4-3) on Saturday and then beating Whittier (1-0, 6-0) in both games of the double header on Sunday. Two freshmen broke out this weekend as Cassie Davis (CMC) had three RBI and Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) homered in the Athenas’ second win over Whittier. CMS sits in second place in SCIAC with an 11-5 conference record, 16-9 overall.
The Athena tennis team went 3-0 during the week beating Middlebury (5-4), Chapman (9-0) and Redlands (9-0). Sophomore Caroline Ward (CMC) won a hard fought singles match over Middlebury while the doubles team of senior Crystal Lim (CMC) and sophomore Yvonne Likomanova (CMC) won 8-0 in the team’s win over Chapman. On Wednesday, April 2, the Athenas host No. 2 Williams at 4 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
Women’s Track & Field
The CMS women beat both Pomona-Pitzer and Caltech in the weekends’ SCIAC dual meet at Occidental. The Athenas had seven outright winners including sophomore Bridget Blum (CMC) in the 1500 (4:46.81), sophomore Tess Williams (SCR) in the 5000 (18:07.87), senior Meg O’Keefe (HMC) in the 400 hurdles (65.30), senior Allison Barnwell (CMC) in the steeplechase (11:12.10), junior Erin Ristig (CMC) in the pole vault (10-8.25), freshman Vaiva Palunas (SCR) in the discus throw (125-10) and the 4 x 400 relay team (4:00.91) of O’Keefe, freshman Amy Hollshwander (CMC), senior Ellyn Erving (SCR) and sophomore Alex Arnett (CMC). The Athenas are 2-2 in SCIAC competition and a select group of athletes will compete this weekend at the California/Nevada Championships at UC San Diego Friday-Saturday, April 4-5. The entire team will compete the following weekend at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
Women’s Water Polo
The Athena water polo team was 1-1 last week beating conference rival La Verne 10-8 but losing to Brown 12-9 earlier in the week. In the game against Brown, junior Rose Koper (CMC) scored three goals against her younger sister’s team and added a goal and an assist in the Athenas’ win over La Verne. This week CMS (10-11, 2-0 SCIAC) travels to Caltech (4/2) and Cal Lutheran (4/5) to continue conference play.
Five-College Club Sports
The Claremont Colleges women’s rugby team did not compete last week. The Foxes travel to UC Irvine before hosting Cal State Fullerton on April 5.
