CMS Athletics Week in Review: March 10-16

Winter Sports

Women’s Swimming & Diving

Ten swimmers on the women’s team are preparing to compete in the NCAA Championships, being held from March 19-22 in Indiana.

Spring Sports

Women’s Golf

Faced with a 12-stroke deficit after the first round of the tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s golf team came all the way back to win the Jekyll Island Women’s Collegiate Invitational by three strokes over Texas-Tyler, March 14-16 at Indian Mound Golf Course. CMS had two individual finishers in the top 10 in senior Maya Reddy (CMC), who finished in seventh, and junior Tiffany Su (CMC), who tied for 10th place overall. CMS takes on Harvard on March 21 in its next event.

Women’s Lacrosse

CMS Lacrosse did not play last week in preparation for a trip to the Pacific Northwest to play University of Puget Sound, George Fox and Linfield over Spring Break.

Softball

The Athena softball team was 4-0 over the weekend with sweeps over Cal Lutheran (2-1, 7-4) and Pomona-Pitzer (2-0, 9-1). Sophomore Katie Savard (CMC) was 6 for 11 at the plate with nine RBI, including a homer against Pomona-Pitzer. Junior Hayley Schultz (CMC) recorded her third shutout and fourth win of the season. The Athenas are 7-1 in their last eight games and are 7-6 overall. CMS travels to Tucson, Ariz., this week to play Augsburg, Central (Iowa), Wisconsin-La Crosse, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Marian (Wis.) in the Tucson Invitational Games Tournament Monday (3/17) through Wednesday (3/19).

Women’s Tennis

The Athena tennis team went 3-1 during the week with wins over Case Western (6-3), Whittier (7-2) and Bowdoin (5-4). Sophomore Yvonne Likomanova (CMC) played an integral role in the 5-4 victory over Bowdoin with a win in No. 3 doubles, teaming with senior teammate Crystal Lim (CMC), and a victory in No. 6 singles. CMS co-hosts the Hen-Athena Women’s Tennis Classic from March 21-23, which brings several top-ranked teams to Claremont over the weekend.

Women’s Track & Field

The men’s and women’s distance runners competed at the Occidental Distance Carnival last Friday night and recorded 31 personal bests along with 13 seasonal bests in 49 races. Sophomore Tess Williams (SCR) set a personal best in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:33.60. The sprinters, hurdles, jumpers and throwers will compete on Saturday, March 22 at the Randall Cunningham Invitational at UNLV. The entire team will compete again when it resumes SCIAC competition on March 29 at Occidental.

Women’s Water Polo

The CMS water polo team was 4-3 last week, beating George Washington (13-10), St. Francis (11-4), Chapman (15-6) and Concordia (13-8), while losing to Azusa Pacific (17-16), Cal State Northridge (18-7) and Iona (12-5). In the victory over George Washington, Junior Allison Hu (CMC) had 16 saves and was instrumental in the Athenas taking down the D-I foe. The Athenas are 8-10 overall and play Chapman at home over Spring Break at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 19.

Five-College Club Sports

Women’s Rugby

The Claremont Colleges women’s rugby team lost 52-17 to league-leading Cal State Long Beach on Saturday at Linde Field.  Scoring tries for the Foxes were Katelyn Faust (CMC ’17) and Naomi Brooks (Pitzer ’ 16).  After spring break, the Foxes travel to UC Irvine before hosting Cal State Fullerton on April 5.
