CMS Athletics Week in Review: February 3-9

The Athena basketball team was 2-0 last week, beating Occidental (75-36) and Pomona-Pitzer (63-48). In the win over Occidental, senior Kyra Ray (SCR) scored 11 points in the first half. In Saturday’s rivalry game, freshman Kris Brackmann (CMC) came off the bench and scored 14 points. The team is tied for first place in SCIAC standings and next plays at Caltech on Feb. 13 and returns home Feb. 15 to play La Verne.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
The CMS women won the dual meet against Pomona-Pitzer and remain undefeated in SCIAC play. Pool records were set by senior Michele Kee (CMC) in the 100 free, senior Annika Jessen (CMC) in the 100 fly, junior Molly Loftus (CMC) in the 1,000 free, freshman Kelly Ngo (CMC) in the 100 back, and freshman Emily McKinnon (CMC) in the 200 breaststroke. Freshman Mary Lynn Clark (SCR) won her first collegiate event on the 3-meter board. They have next weekend off in preparation for the SCIAC Championships on Feb. 20-23.
The Athena lacrosse team lost to Redlands (17-9) in its season and home opener. In the final 20 minutes of play, the Athenas went on a 7-1 run led by sophomore Christina Coffin (CMC), who scored three goals. CMS plays at Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. Wednesday and at Whittier at 11 a.m. Feb. 15.
The Athena softball team was 0-2 in Saturday’s double-header against Concordia, the 2013 Division I NAIA Champions. Freshman Kaylilani Minami (CMC) went the distance in the first game, giving up only one run in the bottom of the 7th inning in a 1-0 loss. The Athenas scored first in the second game and sophomore Carlene Roberts (CMC) hit a three-run homer but ultimately lost 14-7. CMS begins SCIAC play on Saturday with a double-header at Redlands at noon and 2 p.m.
The Athena tennis team did not compete this week. Next up for the Athenas are matches at Cal State Los Angeles and home against Caltech on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Women’s Track & Field
After the Alumni meet on Feb. 1, the CMS track and field team did not compete last week. Its next event is the All-Comers meet at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Women’s Water Polo
The Athena water polo team did not play last week. Its home opener is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 against Hawaii.
