CMS Athletics Week in Review: February 10-16

The Athena basketball team was 2-0 last week, beating Caltech (66-37) and La Verne (74-51) to push its overall record to 20-3, 12-2 in conference. Against Caltech, 11 Athenas scored. Senior Madeline Barnes (SCR) finished with 22 points in Saturday’s game against La Verne, her third-highest scoring game this season. In the final week of regular-season games, the Athenas face Redlands at home for the final-regular season game in Ducey Gym at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, and then travel to Cal Lutheran to play at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
The CMS women did not compete last weekend and will participate in the SCIAC Championships from Feb. 20-23 at Commerce Pool.
In the SCIAC #1 Tournament over the weekend, the Athenas placed first overall despite sitting in third place after Day 1. The Redlands team shot an SCIAC record 307 on the first day of the tournament. On the second day, the Athenas shot 300, setting both CMS and SCIAC records for lowest rounds in one day. Senior Maya Reddy (CMC) placed first for the individuals. CMS next competes in the Collegiate Invitational from March 14-16 in Ga.
The Athena lacrosse team was 1-1 last week, losing to Pomona-Pitzer (11-9) but beating Whittier in overtime (7-6). In Wednesday’s loss to the Sagehens, sophomore Christina Coffin (CMC) scored four of the team’s nine goals and sophomore Kate Anello (CMC) came into the game and had six saves for the Athenas. Against Whittier, CMS came back from a 5-2, halftime deficit to score and win in the first overtime period. Freshman Zoe Pinczower (SCR) had two goals on the day, including the game-winner. The team is now 1-2 and returns to action at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 against Occidental at home.
The Athena softball team was 0-2 in its SCIAC opener at Redlands. In the first game, freshman Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) doubled, one of CMS’ three hits in the 8-0 loss. Senior Megan Latta (CMC) and sophomore Mikayla O’Neal (CMC) each had the team’s only RBI on the day in the second game, a 6-2 loss. The Athenas are now 0-5 and continue with SCIAC play at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 against Chapman at home.
The Athena tennis team was 1-1 for the weekend as they faced Cal State L.A. (5-4 loss) and Caltech (8-1 win). Senior Crystal Lim (CMC) won all three matches she played in, one singles against Cal State L.A. and two doubles with her partners, junior Sarah Kukino (CMC) and sophomore Yvonne Likomanova (CMC). The team next plays on Feb. 28 at La Verne.
Women’s Track & Field
The CMS women competed in the All-Comers Meet at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. Freshmen Jen Lehr (SCR) and Amy Hollshwander (CMC) won the 1 mile and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Senior Meg O’Keefe (HMC) placed first in the 400 hurdles. The team competes in the 18th Annual Rossi Relays this Saturday, Feb. 22 at home.
Women’s Water Polo
The Athena water polo team did not compete last week. Its home opener is against Hawaii at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 at Axelrood Pool.
