CMS Athenas Race for Success
Posted: October 4, 2012
The CMS cross country team pulled double duty this past weekend with strong performances at invitationals at Stanford University and Pomona and Pitzer Colleges. The Stanford contingent beat out 13 Division I and eight Division II teams to claim 11th place while the team remaining in Claremont finished third overall and first in SCIAC.
Marnie Hogue ’13 was among the scorers for the Athenas, who finished the Stanford Invitational with 348 points. Lisa Beem ’14 was the first Athena to finish the 6K race at Pomona-Pitzer, running a personal best of 23:09 to take 16th place. Katie Girvan ’16 (23:58) and Kaylee Anderson ’16 (24:46) also recorded personal bests, finishing 41st and 65th, respectively.
Despite the early starting time for both the Stags and the Athenas, it was an energetic meet, with many students attending to cheer on their classmates. “It’s a fun meet,” said Allison Rigby ’14, who finished 69th with a time of 24:56. “There were a lot of CMS people cheering each other on… a lot of people I didn’t even know.”
It’s not difficult to see why—the P-P Invitational is the closest the cross-country team will come to home, and the Athenas are the fifth-ranked team nationally. “The team is just getting stronger and stronger,” Rigby said.
The Athenas will compete again this Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana in the Pre-Nationals.
