What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

Scripps College Information Technology provides multi-factor authentication (MFA) technology (also known as two-factor authentication 2FA), adding an extra layer of login protection for Scripps systems.  This helps prevent anyone from accessing your accounts even if they know your username and password.  MFA requires two or more factors to identify the individual and authenticate them for login.  One factor is your login password and the other factor will be the your Smart Phone (via the DUO Mobile App,) Token Device, or Landline.  This makes it difficult for any unauthorized person to login to an account or web service that is protected with MFA.

Scripps has partnered with DUO to bring you MFA.

How do I enroll in MFA?

Have your devices ready for enrollment.  Login to your Scripps web based services and you will automatically be promoted to enroll.

How do I enroll my Smart Devices with DUO Mobile?

The Duo Mobile application makes it easy to authenticate — just tap “Approve” on the login request sent to your Device.

How do I enroll a Cell Phone or Landline?

Duo works with all Cell Phones and Landlines by supporting authentication via a phone call or SMS passcodes.

How do I use Duo with a Hardware Token?

Hardware Tokens are the most basic way of authenticating.

Do I need to use MFA?

Yes, all Staff and Faculty will need to enroll in MFA.

What if I don’t enroll?

You will not be able to access your Scripps web based services until you enroll.

How do I access the service?

You will automatically be promoted to verify your identity through DUO when you attempt to login to any service that is protected by DUO.

What is DUO?

DUO is a security service that uses two-factor authentication to make logins more secure.

What if I do not want to use my Smart Phone?

If you would prefer not to use your Smart Phone or if your device is not compatible that is ok.  You can opt to receive a call to a Landline for authentication or we can provide you with a Hardware Token.  If you have a Cell Phone and you would like to use that but it is not a Smart Phone you can opt for a text message or phone call for authentication.
