Commencement 2014 Information

Dear Graduation Candidates, Class of 2014,

Commencement is quickly approaching. Here are the final details to help you prepare for the weekend. If you have questions, that are not answered here, please contact the Office of Public Events at 909-607-1870 or events@scrippscollege.edu.

Accessibility and Language Services

Please notify the Office of Public Events to request accommodations for any guests who have accessibility needs. This might include hearing assistance, ASL interpretation, wheelchair seating, disabled parking, etc. A map showing disabled parking areas and wheelchair access routes on campus can be found here. Please note that the Humanities Auditorium will also be set up with a live feed of the ceremony on Elm Tree Lawn for individuals who may have difficulties with outdoor seating. The auditorium will be air conditioned and is wheelchair accessible.

This year, Scripps College has made available a wireless audio system for simultaneous Spanish interpretation of the Commencement ceremony. Please notify the Office of Public Events to request headsets for any guests who would like to hear the live Spanish language broadcast of the ceremony. The service is offered at no, but a piece of identification will be required to pick up a headset.

Cap and Gown Pick-up Schedule

Cap and Gown pick-up will be held in the North/South Meeting Rooms in the Malott Commons Thursday, May 15 and Friday, May 16 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Please enter the meeting rooms through Stewart Court on the west side of the Commons. Tickets for the dinner dance (both purchased and reserved complimentary) will also be handed out at this time.

Caps and gowns must be returned immediately after Commencement in front of the Tiernan Field House. Please contact Career Planning & Resources with any questions about cap and gown pick-up/return.

Commencement Rehearsal

A mandatory rehearsal for graduates participating in the Commencement ceremony will be held Friday, May 16 at 5:00 p.m. It is extremely important that you arrive at Denison Library by 4:30 p.m. to get your number and line up so that rehearsal can start on time at 5:00. In addition to running through the Commencement ceremony basics, we will be making last-minute procedural announcements and handing out the numbers your family will need to access the photo op platform on Saturday. If rehearsal begins promptly at 5:00 p.m., it should end by 6:00 p.m. Caps and gowns are not needed for rehearsal

Senior Class Photo

Don’t forget to arrive at the Wood Steps at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 for the senior class photo. The photo will be taken with caps and gowns, so please be prepared. The class will move directly from the photo to lining up for the Commencement processional

Commencement Ceremony

Commencement is on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are NOT required for the ceremony. Seating is open and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating begins at 3:30 p.m. Seats may not be saved.

Celebration Dinner Dance

The Celebration Dinner Dance will be on Saturday, May 17, 2014, beginning at 7:30.All tickets should have been reserved or purchased by this time. Students will receive their family’s tickets during cap and gown pick-up. Tickets are non-replaceable and non-refundable.

Please be advised that during the Dinner Dance, anyone looking less than 21 years old may be asked to provide valid photo identification to obtain an alcoholic beverage. Families may not bring their own alcoholic beverages into the dinner dance.

Commencement Flowers

Are you considering buying flowers for your graduate? Let Scripps College help you. The College is pleased to partner with a local florist for Commencement that will make your life simpler, save you money, and provide a way for you to give back to the College. Sherwood Florist, a longtime Claremont florist, is offering to take online orders for families of Scripps graduates, and deliver them to campus on May 17. The florist will also provide leis and bouquets for sale on campus prior to the ceremony. Both online pre-sales and on-campus sales are offered to Scripps families and friends at  discounted prices not available in the store.
