Costa Rica

The Scripps College list of approved SAGE – Study Abroad and Global Education programs may change in response to students' interests and feedback, faculty, and administrative evaluations as well as changing world events. Study abroad is not without risks and students are advised to carefully choose their study site.

The Scripps Committee on Study Abroad (COSA) has approved the following programs in Costa Rica for our students.

Heredia

Academic Program

Students attend classes at the National University, Heredia. Instruction consists of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and tutorials. Courses are taught in Spanish. On-site orientations and fieldtrips are included.

  • Eligibility: 9.0 cumulative GPA; two years college-level Spanish (through Spanish 44); 3-5 courses in major.
  • Number of program participants: 35

Living Arrangements

Students live in private homes. Meals are taken with the host family.

Term Dates

  • Fall: Mid-August to mid-December
  • Spring: Early January to mid-May

  • Visa Information: After acceptance, your program will provide you with specifics about the visa required. The embassy site will have information on visa requirements for planning purposes.

San José

Academic Program

Instruction consists of lectures, seminars, tutorials, language study and research.. Courses are taught primarily in Spanish. Internships arranged. On-site orientation and fieldtrips are included.

  • Eligibility: 9.0 cumulative GPA; two years college-level Spanish (through Spanish 44); 3-5 courses in major.
  • Number of program participants: 25

Living Arrangements

Students live in private homes. Meals are taken with the host family and Scripps provides a stipend for lunches.

  • Spring: Late January to early May

Academic Program

Instruction consists of language classes, a seminar, research, and fieldwork. Courses are taught in English/Spanish. On-site orientation and fieldtrips are included.

  • Fields of study: Environmental studies, sustainable development, Spanish language
  • Eligibility: 9.0 cumulative GPA; two years college-level Spanish (through Spanish 44); environmental studies course recommended
  • Number of program participants: 25

Students live in private homes. Meals are taken with the host family.
