New Student Program Coordinator’s Welcome Letter

May 23, 2017

Dear New Students,

Welcome to Scripps College; we are so excited for you to join us!

Our names are Frankie Stark’20 (Psychology), and Sabrina Chung ’20 (Economics and Politics), we are the New Student Program Coordinators for the 2017-2018 academic year. As students, we understand firsthand how confusing, challenging, and rewarding college can be (sometimes all at once). We look forward to supporting you during your transition to Scripps; we will assist each of you throughout your first year as you learn about both college and yourself. Together we will accomplish this through the New Student Program.

The New Student Program presents opportunities for new students to engage in planned academic and social events, including a variety of trips off-campus to area attractions. The most personal component of the program is working with your Peer Mentor (Peer Mentors are the student leaders who make up the New Student Program). All new student are assigned to a Peer Mentor based on common interests; each Peer Mentor works with a small group of new students called your Peer Mentor Group. Peer Mentor Groups provide all new students the opportunity to build relationships with new and current students. These relationships immediately provide a community of supportive classmates, enabling you to explore all of the resources and opportunities that Scripps has to offer. Peer Mentors receive training and they maintain a wealth of knowledge about the college and the consortium. They can provide you information about, clubs & organizations, academic & social resources on campus and around the consortium, and they are advocates of inclusivity. Simply put, they are exceptional resources for you and can be wonderful friends.

The New Student Program will hosts weekly on-campus activities and some off-campus trips throughout the year. Our events give you the opportunity to become more acclimated with Scripps, The Claremont Colleges, and the greater Los Angeles area. Some of our plans for next year include, the Scripps Five College New Student Carnival during orientation and trips to popular local attractions such as Universal Studios and Disneyland. Our time here at Scripps has been amazing and full of exploration; we hope to provide the same for all of you!

We are available now and during the school year to answer all your questions and concerns. The best way to contact us is by sending email to: orientation@scrippscollege.edu or by calling the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) at (909) 607-4307. Please don’t hesitate to reach out; we are here to help!

We eagerly anticipate meeting you on August 24, 2017!

Sincerely,

Frankie & Sabrina
