Scripps College Student Health Insurance Requirements

Charlotte JohnsonJune 17, 2016

Dear Scripps Students and Families,

Congratulations on your admission to Scripps College. On behalf of the Student Affairs team, I want to extend our warm welcome!

I am writing today with important information about Scripps’s student health insurance requirements, which students must fulfill prior to their arrival on campus in August.

The Claremont Colleges require that all students have health insurance. Students can obtain coverage via their own health insurance plan, their parents’ plan, or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) offered by The Claremont Colleges.

If you are going to use your own health insurance plan, or be covered by a parent’s plan, you will be asked to demonstrate proof of health insurance coverage and to waive out of SHIP

*International students may not waive out with insurance from their home country.

If you elect to exercise the waiver option, your insurance must include all of the following elements:

  • Coverage must be continuous (no break or termination) for the entire academic year
  • Coverage must be effective prior to August 30, 2016
  • Maximum benefit must be unlimited
  • Deductible of $1,000 or less per policy year ($2,000 or less per family)
  • Claims must be paid by a U.S.-based company
  • Underwriting company must be owned, operated, and headquartered in the United States and must be in full compliance with applicable federal laws. International students may not waive with insurance from their home country*

* All of the above elements are included in SHIP.

If your insurance meets the above criteria and you wish to waive out of SHIP, you will need to complete a Waiver Application Form by July 31, 2016.

If you do not waive out of The Claremont Colleges’ SHIP by the deadline, you will remain automatically enrolled, and a charge will appear on your student bill.

If you are going to use The Claremont Colleges’ Student Health Insurance Plan, you do not need to do anything at this point. You will be automatically enrolled in SHIP.  Please note that all international visa students are required to enroll in The Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan.

The cost of the plan for 2016-2017 is $1890. We are pleased to announce that this year’s SHIP plan is a “platinum” plan with coverage of 100% PPO/90% non-PPO (meaning that, with few exceptions, the insured student pays 0% coinsurance in-network and 10% coinsurance for out-of-network covered services). You can find more information about the SHIP plan on the student health insurance website.

We encourage you to investigate your family insurance plan carefully. You might find that your family insurance plan does not cover services that are out of your geographic network and that, if your policy is in another state, it may not cover seeing a specialist in California.  We encourage students to be enrolled in SHIP if they have out of state coverage, or HMO or PPO coverage within a limited provider area. If you need assistance covering the cost of the SHIP premium, please contact our Office of Financial Aid at finaid@scrippscollege.edu or at (909) 621-8275. That office may be able to assist you with a loan to cover a portion of the cost or the entire cost, depending upon your need.

If you have questions or concerns regarding student health insurance at Scripps, have background information you would like to share, or questions about disability accommodation issues, we would very much like to hear from you.  Please contact my office at (909) 621-8277.

We wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to welcoming you to campus in the fall.

Warm regards,

Charlotte Johnson
