New Student Orientation

Introduction to SOAR!

June 28, 2018

Dear New Students,

We, your 2018 SOAR Co-Coordinators, congratulate and welcome you to Scripps College. This letter will acquaint you with the goals of the Scripps Orientation Activities Retreat (SOAR) and highlight important forms and deadlines.

First and foremost, both members of our team (Ryan Finley ’20, an Organizational Studies and Theater double major, and Ariel Lewis ’20, a Middle East and North Africa Studies major and Media Studies minor) are very excited to meet you. We will be working all summer long to make SOAR 2018 a memorable day.  SOAR is a day-long excursion into the Los Angeles and the surrounding area that creates opportunities to challenge you, make meaningful and lasting connections, accustom you to the area, and above all have a blast! On Saturday, September 1st, you will go on one of many trips that range from kayaking in Long Beach to viewing beautiful exhibitions at the Getty Museum.  We created these trips with the diverse interests and abilities of the Scripps student in mind, so there is something for everyone. They are:

  • Broad Museum
  • El Pueblo Culture Walk
  • Escape ROom
  • Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary
  • Griffith Observatory Hike
  • Kayaking at Long Beach
  • Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) & La Brea Tar Pits
  • Mount Hollywood Hike
  • Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden
  • Ropes Course at UC Riverside
  • Santa Monica Pier
  • Scavenger Hunt at the Getty Museum

The SOAR program is required of all new students as a component of orientation. Please choose your trip using this link. We have created a detailed list of the trips, including what you can expect such as level of physical activity and exposure to natural elements. For example, a 6-mile hike in August requires more physical activity and sun exposure than a museum tour. Please read all trip descriptions thoroughly before making any decisions, and keep in mind what will be best for you while knowing we will work to accommodate any and all of your needs.  You can contact us with any concerns of this nature.

While we try our best to place you on your first or second choice trip, SOAR cannot guarantee this due to limited availability. We recommend you complete the necessary forms as early as possible since we assign students to trips on a first-come, first-serve basis. The deadline for completing the form is Wednesday, August 1st at 5pm PDT.  If you have not completed the form by this time, we cannot guarantee your placement on one of your top choice trips.

Please print and sign the SOAR Assumption of Risk, Waiver of Liability and Indemnification Agreement, which can be found on your Scripps Housing Portal. The form is located on your dashboard under More —> Documents. Download the document to sign and then upload the document (PDF format) to your account.  Be sure to name the signed form as follows, UsernameSOAR2018 (ex. escripps0987SOAR2018).  We must have a copy of this on file in order for you to participate. If you are under the age of 18, your parent or guardian must sign the liability form. Please return the form as soon as possible.  The deadline to submit the waiver is Wednesday, August 1st at 5pm PDT.

If you have any questions or concerns, regarding anything mentioned here or otherwise, please email us at soar@scrippscollege.edu or call 909.607.8809.  We hope you are enjoying your summer.

Sincerely,

Ryan Finley ’20
