New Student Orientation

Introduction to SOAR!

July 15, 2016

Dear New Students,

Congratulations on your decision to attend Scripps College! We look forward to welcoming you to campus next month. The purpose of this letter is to introduce you to the Scripps Orientation Activities Retreat (SOAR) program. However, before we go into what SOAR is about, we wish to introduce ourselves, as we are the Co-Coordinators of the SOAR program. We are Merritt Gohn (Class of 2018) English and Media Studies major and Milena Mans (Class of 2019) dual Sociology and Media Studies major with a minor in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. We are very excited to introduce you to SOAR.

The purpose of the SOAR program is to assist you with your transition to college and help you bond as Scripps newest students. On Saturday, August 27, 2016, you all will go on an assortment of exciting Los Angeles County-based day trips! The SOAR trips were carefully chosen to provide opportunities that encourage and sustain new relationships, foster community, and engage you in fun and meaningful ways all while getting to know a bit about the area .

There will be six different day trips that cater to a wide range of interests and desired activity levels, spanning from Central Los Angeles, all the way to Long Beach. In addition, the New Student Program (NSP) Peer Mentors will lead you on the trips and join in on all the fun.

The SOAR trip options are*:

  • Indoor Rock Climbing (at Sender One Climbing)
  • Griffith Park & Hollywood Hills Hike
  • Natural History Museum
  • Kayaking (in the Long Beach Naples Canals)
  • Stand Up Paddle boarding (in the Long Beach Naples Canals)
  • Los Angeles County Museum of Art
  • Santa Monica Pier

*In order of distance from campus.

Please fill out your choices here. When picking your top choices, refer to the descriptions (PDF) of each trip. Some trips require more physical activity and exposure to heat and sun. Keep in mind what would be best for you.

While we will do our best to place you on your first or second choice for the trip; please be advised that there is no guarantee that we will be able place everyone in their first and second

trip picks due to limited availability on each trip. All SOAR trips will be assigned on a first come first serve basis, so the sooner you submit your preferences the greater the likelihood you will go on your first or second trip choice. The SOAR program is a mandatory NSO 2016 program for all new students.

Please fill out and turn in the SOAR Assumption of Risk, Waiver of Liability and Indemnification Agreement before the day of SOAR trips. We must have a copy of this form on file in order for you to be eligible for the event. If you are under age of 18, your parent or guardian must sign your liability form. Please complete and return the form as soon as possible by attaching it at the end of your registration form or via fax, email, or mailing a hard copy. Please submit the forms no later than Friday, July 29, 2016, at 5PM PST. Some trips may require another waiver specific to the company. Late waiver forms will be accepted after you arrive on campus at the Sallie Tiernan Field House however, it is imperative that we receive this waiver form before the day of the SOAR trips.

If you have any questions, concerns, or are unable to complete the forms electronically, please reach out to us at soar@scrippscollege.edu or (909) 607-8809. Any and all questions or concerns are welcome (form-related or not). We hope you are enjoying your summer; we look forward to seeing you in August!
