Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty
Posted: January 16, 2018
Dear Scripps College Community,
I am pleased to announce that Professor Amy Marcus-Newhall will continue in her role as vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty for a five-year term, to begin July 1, 2018. Amy has been a trusted advisor, a devoted steward, and a generous supporter of Scripps College for more than 25 years, and I am grateful that she will continue to serve the College in this important role for another term.
Earlier in the fall semester, I asked faculty, staff, and board members for their feedback and input on Amy’s work as the Dean of Faculty. There was broad participation, and I was warmed and touched by the amount of admiration and respect conveyed. Amy is known as a hard worker who has dedicated herself to supporting the development of the faculty and building upon the strengths of the College—her colleagues trust and depend on her.
Throughout her time at Scripps, Amy has proven to be a dynamic and resourceful leader as well as a strong advocate for interdisciplinary learning and scholarship. She has played an essential role in the ongoing transition to the 2-2 plus thesis teaching load for faculty members, has overseen the growth of programming for pre-tenured faculty members, and has been key in acquiring grants and funds directed toward faculty development such as the Mellon grants for undergraduate research, the interdisciplinary humanities core program, and the Center for Teaching and Learning. I am thrilled for the continuity this reappointment brings our faculty and my administrative team, and I am looking very much forward to continuing to work closely with Amy.
Please join me in thanking Amy for her deep commitment and service to the College and in wishing her congratulations and continued success in her renewed role as dean of faculty.
