IDEA Extends ConverActions, Adds New Dialogues, Workshops for the 2017–18 Academic Year
Posted: September 11, 2017
Beginning this fall, the Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) initiative will sponsor a yearlong series of events, conversations, and workshops open to Scripps students, faculty, and staff as well as the entire 7C community.
Building on last year’s programming, we will continue to host ConverActions on the National Climate on Race, Community, and Change. These moderated noontime discussions follow select Scripps Presents programs and are open to the entire 7C community. Participants are invited to address topics and themes raised by Scripps Presents speakers as well as identify opportunities for action and change, both on and off campus.
We are also partnering with Scripps Presents to host a special, three-part series, Nasty Women, that is open to the 7C community. The series will kick off on Tuesday, September 19, with a noontime conversation between author Carina Chocano and Scripps’ Dorothy Cruickshank Backstrand Chair in Gender and Women’s Studies Piya Chatterjee about the ways that pop culture influences female identity. The second event, moderated by Scripps Writing Program Director and Associate Professor of Writing Kimberly Drake on October 12, will look at feminism, resistance, and revolution in the Age of Trump; the series concludes on October 26 with a noontime ConverAction on female identity, feminism, and politics.
New this year are Intergroup Dialogues (IGD) for Scripps faculty, staff, and students only. These sessions are designed to develop understanding of social identities and statuses (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious identity, ability status, citizenship/immigration status, socio-economic background), foster empathy and motivation to bridge differences, and build personal and collective responsibility for social justice. Participants will also be invited to share their perspectives on diversity and campus climate issues.
We hope to see you at an upcoming IDEA event! For more information about IDEA, including a full list of programs, please visit the IDEA website.
