Community message regarding admissions policy discussions

Posted: September 12, 2014

Dear Scripps College faculty, staff, and students,

The Scripps College community has engaged in an ongoing conversation about its mission, traditions, and aspirations as a women’s college over the past several years, in light of the growing acceptance of transgender people in our society. We recognize the need to clarify our admissions policy for current and prospective students, and we are committed this year to engaging the campus community to achieve clarity about this important topic.

I am currently in the process of soliciting input from our established governing bodies – Scripps Associated Students, the Faculty Executive Committee, the Alumnae Leadership Council, and the Staff Council – about updating the admissions policy to address gender identity regardless of sex assigned at birth. I encourage all members of the community to participate in this important conversation by sharing your perspective with your elected/appointed representatives and/or with members of the senior team.

Under our established governance processes, the Board of Trustees is the decision-making body for any admissions policy change. The Board is looking forward to engaging in a series of discussions about transgender admissions over the next several months. We are all committed to developing a policy that reflects Scripps’ core values, and a process that ensures all constituencies’ voices are represented and respected.

Sincerely,

Lori Bettison-Varga
President
