CMS Athletics Week in Review: May 5-11

Women’s Golf

The NCAA invited Maya Reddy ’14 (CMC) and Tiffany Su ’15 (CMC) to compete as individuals in the NCAA Division III Golf Championships, May 13-16 at the El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Softball

The Athena softball team swept through the first round of the NCAA Regional, beating Linfield 2-1 and Redlands 8-5 on the first day of the tournament and then Redlands again 7-2 in the championship game on Saturday. Over the weekend, Hayley Schultz ’15 (CMC) posted a 1.58 ERA and was named the most outstanding player of the tournament. Katie Savard ’16 (CMC) was 6-for-11 over the three games, and Brooklyn Robinson ’16 (SCR) hit two home runs in the same game against Redlands. CMS advances to an NCAA Super Regional hosted by East Texas Baptist for a best two-out-of-three series starting 5 p.m. CST on Friday, May 16.

Women’s Tennis

The Athena tennis team hosted and won an NCAA Regional, defeating Pomona-Pitzer (5-0) in the final. Against Pomona-Pitzer in the teams’ second meeting of the season, CMS swept Pomona-Pitzer, led by an 8-3 victory by Caroline Ward ’16 (CMC) and Katie Kuosman ’17 (CMC). CMS advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 19 against Johns Hopkins. CMS is the host for both the team and individual 2014 NCAA Tennis Championships.

Women’s Track & Field

Individuals from the Athena track and field team competed in the Claremont Classic XI Decathlon/Heptathlon and the Occidental Invite over the weekend. Amy Hollshwandner ’17 (CMC) set the CMS freshman record and is currently the top freshman in the nation with 4,208 points in the heptathlon. At the Oxy Invitational, the 4×400 relay team ran the fifth-fastest time in CMS history at 3:53.87, with Meg O’Keefe ’14 (HMC), Ellyn Erving ’14 (SCR), Cora Miller ’15 (CMC) and Hanna Tarleton ’17 (CMC). The Redlands Last Chance meet on May 16 is the final event before the NCAA Division III Championships, May 22-24 in Delaware, Ohio.
