CMS Athletics Week In Review (3/23 – 3/29/15)
===================== Spring Sports – Women ====================
Women’s Water Polo
The women’s water polo team went 2-1 last weekend with wins over Cal Lutheran (8-5) and Occidental (11-10), with the loss coming at the hands of Brown (7-1). In the Athenas’ victory over Cal Lutheran, Brittany Arneson (CMC ’17) led the team with three goals, and against Occidental, Haley Connor (CMC ’15) scored with just 1:48 left in the game to give the Athenas the win. The CMS women’s water polo team (6-14, 3-0 in SCIAC) is next in action at Redlands at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
In the annual Claremont Colleges women’s golf showdown between Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer, CMS came away with a resounding 37-stroke victory over its rival on March 29 in the one-round Walker Cup at the Los Serranos North Golf Course to retain the trophy. Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC ’17) tied with Pomona-Pitzer’s Tiffany Gu as the event medalist, as each shot 3-over par scores of 75 to lead the field. CMS Lindsay Slocum (CMC ’17) finished one stroke back with a 76 to finish in third.
The Athenas went 2-2 this past weekend as they split their series with Redlands (4-5, 6-2) on Friday and split with La Verne (8-1, 0-2). In the series verses Redlands, Brooklyn Robinson (SCR ’16) went 4 for 4 and scored three runs as Tara Robinson (CMC ’16) went 3-5 and scored 3 runs. Against La Verne on Saturday, eight Athenas scored, and Anna Gurr (CMC ’18) improved to 7-2 pitching on the season. The Athenas (16-6, 10-4 in conference) are next in action against Whittier on Athena field at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday.
The CMS women’s tennis team went 3-0 last week with wins over MIT (8-1), La Verne (8-1) and Whittier (8-1). In the three matches, the No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Kukino (CMC ’15) and Kyla Scott (HMC ’18) were the only doubles team for CMS to go undefeated. Also going undefeated in all three matches for the Athenas last week were Katie Kuosman (CMC ’17) and Lindsay Brown (CMC ’18). The Athenas (14-1, 3-0) are next in action at Redlands as they take on the Bulldogs at 2 p.m. April 3.
Women’s Track & Field
The women’s track team went 2-0 last week as it competed in the Pomona-Pitzer dual meet, beating Pomona-Pitzer 110-52, and La Verne 125-32. Event winners for the Athenas included Tyra Abraham (SCR ’18) in the 100 (12.22), AiyannaCameron-Lewis (CMC ’18) in the 200 (25.86) and 400 (56.32), Bryn McKillop (SCR ’18) in the 800 (2:15.80), LaurenStanislaw (SCR ’18) in the 5,000 (19:50.26), AmyHollshwandner (CMC ’17) in the 100 hurdles (15.65), HannaTarleton (CMC ’17) in the 400 hurdles (62.94), KaitlynSpees (SCR ’15) in the steeplechase (11:25.84), the 4 x 100 relay team of Madi Knaub (CMC ’15), Tarleton, Cameron-Lewis and Abraham (47.99), the 4 x 400 relay team of Tarleton, Carmen Mejia (SCR ’17), Cora Miller (CMC ’15) and Cameron-Lewis (3:53.46), Liz Lee (HMC ’17) in the triple jump (37-5.25), Emily Bassett (CMC ’18) in the shot put (38-11.75) and hammer throw (167-3), and Vaiva Palunas (SCR ’17) in the discus (146-0). Palunas broke her own school record while Abraham tied the school record. The Athenas are next in action April 4 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
The women’s lacrosse team did not compete last week but are in action at Occidental College at 7 p.m. Thursday.
===================== Spring Sports – Men ====================
The CMS men’s golf team competed in the West Cup invitational and placed third in the 15-team event. After being 11 strokes behind La Verne after the first round, the Stags rallied over the next two rounds to overtake La Verne (895) as the Stags finished at 896 to take third place. The leading golfer for the Stags was Matt Shuman (CMC ’18), who finished in a tie for 5th place overall with a three-round, 5-over par score of 221. The Stags are next in action in the second SCIAC meet at Los Serranos on April 11-12.
The CMS baseball team went 3-1 last week as it took a loss to MIT (9-6) but swept Caltech (10-0, 8-3, 8-2). On Friday against Caltech, Mackenzie Menthen (CMC ’16) pitched the first shutout of the season for the Stags. Nolan Anderson (CMC ’18) and Trey Smith (CMC ’18) managed to rack up four RBIs in two games last weekend. Smith also stole three bases on the weekend. Menthen led the Stags in runs scored with seven. The Stags (5-24, 3-15) are next in action next at Redlands at 3 p.m. April 10.
The CMS men’s tennis team went 3-0 last week with two 9-0 shutouts over UC Santa Cruz and Whittier and a 7-2 win over Middlebury (Vt.). The No. 2 doubles team of Skler Butts (CMC ’16) and Daniel Morkovine (CMC ’17) played together in all three matches and were undefeated. In singles action, Warren Wood (CMC ’15), Butts and Morkovine played in all three matches and all three were undefeated. The Stags (15-1, 2-0) remain undefeated against all Division III opponents and are in action next against Williams (Mass.) at home at 4 p.m. April 1.
