Athletics Week in Review : April 22-28

Women’s Water Polo

The Athenas closed out their season by finishing in third place at the SCIAC Women’s Water Polo Championships over the weekend at Pasadena City College. CMS opened the Championships with a 14-7 win over La Verne on
Friday. On Saturday, Redlands topped CMS 10-9. On Sunday against Occidental in the third-place game, junior driver Alex Toohey (CMC) scored with 48 seconds left in sudden victory overtime to give CMS a 9-8, come-from-behind victory. The Athenas ended the season with a 15 wins, the program’s most since 2011.


The Athenas swept their way through the SCIAC Postseason Tournament to clinch the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship and the conference’s automatic bid to NCAA postseason play. On Friday, CMS topped Chapman 3-0 and La Verne 3-0. The team closed out its weekend with a 13-2 victory over Redlands in the Championship Game. Sophomore outfielder Marie Bradvica (CMC) had a team-high five RBI in Saturday’s win over Redlands. The Athenas are 32-11 overall and now await their NCAA postseason opponent, which is scheduled to be announced at 7 a.m. PST Monday, May 6.

Women’s Lacrosse

The Athenas closed out their season with a 13-12 triple overtime loss at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the SCIAC Women’s Lacrosse Championships. Senior midfielder Madi Shove (Scripps) and senior attacker Rachel Darby (Scripps) scored seven goals and one goal, respectively, in their final game for the Athenas. CMS ended the season with an 8-10 overall record and 4-7 in SCIAC play.

Women’s Track & Field

The women’s track & field team finished in third at the SCIAC Championships on April 26-27 at Occidental College with 134 points. The Athenas, who finished 7-1 in dual meets, finished tied for second in the conference for the season. The Athenas won two individual events at the meet. The winners were senior Reny Colton (CMC) in the 100 hurdles (15.16) and junior Allison Barnwell (CMC) in the steeplechase (11:11.65).

Women’s Tennis

The No. 2 ranked Athenas had the week off from team competition but two team members – freshman Yvonne Likomanova (CMC) junior Chloe Dobbert (CMC) – participated in singles and doubles play at the 113th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament over the weekend. Dobbert won five matches over three days to win the singles tournament while the doubles duo lost their lone match. Next up for the Athenas is the SCIAC Women’s Tennis Championships May 3-4 hosted by the University of La Verne.

Women’s Golf

With four finishers in the top-5, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s golf team cruised to its second-straight title at the SCIAC Women’s Golf Championships April 27-29 at Oak Valley Golf Course. As the SCIAC Champions, next up for the Athenas are the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships which are May 14-17 at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla. Sophomore Shaina Raskin (Scripps) won the tournament by four strokes with a three-day score of 229.
