Announcing the passing of Life Trustee Martha “Marti” Hammer ’66
Posted: July 12, 2018
Dear Scripps College Staff,
It is with sadness that I share with you that Scripps College Life Trustee, former Board Chair, and alumna Martha “Marti” Wehmeier Hammer ’66 passed away on July 4. She was 73.
Marti joined the Board of Trustees in 1987 and served as Chair of the Board from 1991-1996, during which time she was a key leader of the College’s 1995 Strategic Plan. In 1989, Marti chaired the Presidential Selection Committee that selected Nancy Bekavac to be the sixth president of Scripps College.
In addition to her service on the Board, Marti was a devoted alumna who enthusiastically supported her alma mater in a variety of roles. She was a member of the Scripps College Alumnae Council and served as president of the West Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter; she was a member of her class’ 25th and 30th reunion gift committees; and she steadfastly served as a thoughtful ambassador of the College.
The Martha Wehmeier Hammer ’66 Scholarship was established in 1996 to honor Marti’s service to the College as Board Chair. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding sophomore who successfully completed the three-semester Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities program.
Marti graduated from Scripps in 1966 with a BA in history with honors. She leaves behind her husband of more than 50 years, Steven H. Hammer, their three children, daughter Kirsten Hammer Dueck, sons Braden H. and Michael L. Hammer, a grandchild, and many family and friends.
If you are interested in making a gift to Scripps College in Marti’s memory, please contact Sandi Mero firstname.lastname@example.org in the Office of Advancement.
Details about a memorial service will be made available as soon as the College has confirmed with the family.
