It’s important to keep in mind that the life-cycle of a computer is based in part on the capabilities of the machine you buy today. If you invest in a quality system now, then you are more likely to be able to use that computer until graduation vs. arriving to the campus with an older/slower system.
Special Note: If your system meets the requirements listed in the table below, you’ll be able to connect to the Scripps network and have access to campus-provided online services and the Internet.
Users will need to have the latest update of their operating system installed on their computer. For example, if you have Windows 7, the latest version is Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). If you have a Mac running High Sierra, the latest version of this operating system is 10.13.3.
The latest updates to Mac and Windows operating systems are:
Windows:
Mac:
Scripps College supports both Macintosh and Windows equally. Our Art and Music departments use Macintosh computer labs to support many of their courses, and our Psychology and Economics departments primarily use PC computer labs to support their courses. Students should consider what types of applications they want to run and/or with which system they are already familiar.
We encourage students to shop for the best pricing and several of the larger companies, such as Apple and Dell, offer online back-to-school or other promotions. The Huntley Bookstore, which services The Claremont Colleges, also offers educational savings on Apple computers and selected PC brands. For more information, call (909) 607-1625, or visit the Huntley Bookstore website.

Lynda.com is a great resource for students, faculty and staff to become familiar with not only Scripps provided software, but with a wide array of subjects. Please visit the Scripps IT Lynda page for information, instructions and recommended courses.
Only if you connect it using a usb cable; we do not recommend advertising this as a wireless device where it could be accessible by other students in the residence hall. Students receive 2,000 free laser print pages a year; seniors receive 3,000 free laser pages a year, and all residence halls have a laser printer.
All Scripps students, whether using the Scripps network services or connecting only to the Internet, are required to maintain an up-to-date antivirus program on their computers. Many Windows PC’s come with one pre-installed, and you may use that as long as you maintain an active subscription for updates, which usually requires a fee. Alternatively, the Claremont Colleges have a group license for Trend Antivirus software for PCs and Macs that Scripps students may use free of charge.
Although not necessary, having a personal computer is highly recommended. Scripps maintains several locations on campus where students can utilize our computer equipment. Typically, these locations provide support for course-specific applications not available otherwise.
