Student Employment

Career Planning & Resources, the Office of Financial Aid, and Human Resources have teamed up to create a positive student employment experience for both students and supervisors.  Scripps believes fully in the capacity of the student employment experience to provide students with valuable educational experiences, opportunities for personal growth, career development and skills training.  We believe work enhances the total educational journey as students learn responsibilities, attitudes and processes that will contribute to their success post-Scripps.

Student Employment Wage Classifications

The State of California increased the minimum wage to $10.00 per hour effective January 1, 2016. To ensure compliance, CP&R, which oversees student employment, has partnered with Human Resources to recommend standard wage classifications for all on-campus student employment positions. This initiative will establish equity among student positions across the College and provide clarity as we continue to assess budget constraints/needs for student employment. Senior staff has reviewed and approved the following wage classifications to be put into effect July 1, 2016. Read the Official Memo here.

  • Student Assistant I – $10.00
  • Student Assistant II – $10.50
  • Student Assistant III – $11.00

In rare cases, supervisors may request a special wage at $12.00 per hour for consideration based on responsibilities that far exceed those outlined within the existing wage classifications.

The Student Employment Coordinator, located in CP&R, is available to help with questions regarding policies and procedures, posting and promoting open positions, and best practices in supervising student employees. For more information, contact Niah Grimes or call (909) 621-8180.

Request for Student Employment

Complete the Request for Student Employment annually for each student employment position in your department. Requests may take 3-5 business days to process. Once approved, you will receive a confirmation email from the Student Employment Coordinator with a partially completed Personnel Action Form (PAF) for each position. Then positions will be posted in ClaremontConnect, Scripps’ central online job board for students. Set up a personal orientation to ClaremontConnect and learn how to post your positions online.

To hire a student for your open position, please complete and submit a PAF to Human Resources. New hires (any student that has not worked for Scripps in any capacity in the last 12 months) must complete the paperwork listed below:

Students around campus are doing important work to support the missions and visions of the offices that employ them, and we love to hear about their successes! Check out the Dance Department Alumnae Newsletter, written by a former student employee.

Notice to Students

Student employment experiences offer students a double incentive: earn money to help meet college expenses while gaining valuable job experience.  In the competitive job market, employers value work experience among new graduates, an many on-campus departments hire students as employees.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) eligibility is determined by the Office of Financial Aid. For specific questions about your federal work-study award, contact Julia Sundstrom. Note that your FWS status does not guarantee you a job.  You are responsible for the job search process including researching, applying, and interviewing for the positions.
